Fragrance, sight, sounds, tastes . . . When we love a country (for our family, it is Guatemala), we are aware of reminders every day. It could be a certain cleaner that we smell, a rooster crowing, a food or drink that we long for, or simply a person that we meet from the country.
For me it is usually a cool fresh clean morning air with no clouds in the sky or a night with the sound of heavy rain on our roof. Our family will look at each other and comment, “it’s a Guatemala morning” or “I wish we had a tin roof so we could hear the rain.”
Our senses are not only practical gifts from God. They are gifts so that we can enjoy the pleasure of wrapping our treasures around us. A beautiful reminding fragrance is like a soft blanket that we wrap around our shoulders. A reminding sight can bring tears to our eyes because it touches our heart.
Spiritually, we set our eyes on the beauty of our Lord. We breathe in His fragrance. We touch each other in comfort. We feel the love of our savior washing over our hearts. We hear our Father speaking to us in His soft gentle voice. Reminders. Daily reminders. Blankets wrapped around us. Until we are in His presence, we have these beautiful reminders that are so simple and so pleasant to touch, feel, hear, taste and . . . smell.
Song of Solomon 4:16 Awake, north wind,
and come, south wind!
Blow on my garden,
that its fragrance may spread everywhere.
Let my beloved come into his garden
and taste its choice fruits.
