I saw this demonstration in church: The speaker balanced a stick standing straight up from the palm of his hand. He said “if I look at my hand it is impossible to balance the stick. But if I look at the top of the stick it is easy to balance.” The point was to keep our eyes on the Lord and not on our life.
Years later I studied martial arts. When sparring it is necessary to keep your eyes on the eyes of your opponent not on their hands or their feet. “Look up,” the instructor would say. “If you’re looking at their feet, they may hit you with their hand.”
Look up, not down.
