This is another heart felt writing from our 18 year old neighbor. I am reposting it because I appreciate the honesty and openness that a young person can share with. One of the issues that I find hard to accept with depression is the vast number of people that it affects and yet there is so little written about it in the Bible. The word depression is not found and sadness is mentioned only a few times. Why are we so plagued by this menace in our society?

According to Medline Plus, depression may be described as feeling sad, blue, unhappy, miserable, or down in the dumps. On the more extreme end of the spectrum, clinical depression is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with everyday life for an extended period of time.
An alternative definition in dictionaries is that a depression is an area that is sunk below its surroundings; a hollow. I personally think that this definition describes the experience much better. When you’re depressed, you’re at a level of feeling that is so much lower than the people surrounding you. You can watch everyone functioning and going about life feeling fine and dandy, but you’re stuck on an entirely different plane. Then comes the hollow part. Depression makes you hollow, empty.
