A year of changes

In a year before Isaiah was to play varsity soccer at school (He would have been a Freshman this year but his soccer skills were beyond what I can describe) he left us and his soccer team.  Scott Bronner left us this year and missed seeing his son play on a winning team.  The LS team has a new coach.  And through all of this, the LS team is undefeated.  I’m not writing this to darken the clouds – I’m writing this to congratulate Nowa Bronner on his success this year – even through all the pain.  Congrats Nowa!  May God continue to pour out his grace on you!

Pioneers claim L-L League Section Two boys’ soccer title with win over Barons

In its quest to remain unbeaten, Lampeter-Strasburg’s boys’ soccer players have adopted a policy to never talk about the next step until they’ve conquered the one in front of them.

Considering the circumstances, you’ll have to forgive Nowa Bronner if he broke that rule Tuesday afternoon.

At least in his own head.

Bronner’s goal with 7:01 left in the match was the difference for Lampeter-Strasburg, which clinched the L-L League Section Two title with a 1-0 victory at Manheim Central.

It’s just the fourth section title in program history for the Pioneers (12-0-1 L-L, 15-0-1 overall), and their first since winning the Section Three crown in 2008.

While L-S also secured Section Two’s top seed for the L-L playoffs, which begin with Saturday’s quarterfinals at Penn Manor, Central (9-2-2, 12-3-2) can still clinch the section’s second and final L-L playoff berth with a win at last-place Solanco (1-11, 1-13) today.

The Barons actually were hoping to make Tuesday’s game a battle for the section lead until losing a 4-1 decision to E-town on Saturday, which gave L-S a five-point edge in the standings.

Again, as per their policy, the Pioneers never acknowledged that good fortune heading into Tuesday’s match.

“Not that the guys didn’t know, but we didn’t talk about the (E-town) result one bit,” first-year L-S coach Travis Jones said. “How we’ve been all year is: next game, next game. And the guys respond to it.”

In the same manner Bronner responded to a ball that Sondre Soderholm flipped over Central’s defense from midfield with just over 7:00 left to play Tuesday.

After outrunning the Barons’ last two defenders, Bronner picked the bouncing ball off the turf with his head and redirected it past Central goalie Logan Kready and inside the left post for the gamewinner.

“I kind of knew where the goal was but I really didn’t know where the goalie was,” said Bronner, a junior midfielder/forward. “So I just aimed it at the goal and (waited to) see what happened.”

Interestingly enough, what happened a few seconds later was that Bronner — at least in his own head — found himself looking ahead to the idea that he might have just won his team a section title.

“I did feel that and it was pretty crazy,” he admitted. “It was amazing because I’ve never experienced something like that.”

“For as hard as that kid works, I couldn’t ask for a better guy to score (that goal),” Jones said. “And no one on this team would say differently. So that’s what made it even more special.”

Credit Central for why it took so long to get that goal, despite the fact that L-S held an 8-3 edge in shots, a 4-3 advantage in corners, and had created five scoring chances to the Barons’ two by the time it was over.

“There are two ways you can look at this game,” Central first-year coach Rod Brenize said afterward. “One, is we lost. Two, is that (L-S) is ranked fourth or fifth in (District Three’s) AAA (power rankings) and we were right there. That was anybody’s game until the very end.

“So I told our guys I was proud of them. I told them we got beat by a quality side. So hats off to Lampeter-Strasburg.”
