Depression

As Christians we are supposed to be full of joy, hope, faith and peace.  We are conquerors.  We have domain over evil and the enemy’s attacks.  We have salvation.  We have been delivered.

Yeah right.

Oh, I believe all that.  I really do.  I just don’t always feel it.  We all have bad days.  But I’m talking about true believers that struggle daily to just get out of bed.  I’m talking about believers who live on the edge of suicide and can’t eat or sleep.  I’m talking about believers who are racked with pain and can’t see the light of day.

If a believer breaks a leg, we understand that there is pain.  We don’t expect them to jump up and down singing Hallelujah!  I just broke my leg!  If they have just suffered a great loss we understand that too.  What if they don’t suffer from a broken leg but instead have a missing connection in the brain that is misfiring?  How long are we willing to put up with a sad sack Christian that is always down?  Do we yell at them and say “Where is your joy?  Where is your hope in Christ?  You are a new creature that should be basking in glory!”

What if they need medication?  What if it is not a personality trait but a real medical imbalance?  On the other hand, what if that person sitting next to you on Sunday isn’t smiling because of Jesus but because they found really good drugs?  Does that change your faith level in Jesus?

I don’t understand the brain.  I don’t know why some heathens seem happy all the time and some believers are miserable.  I don’t even understand why some people can have a cavity filled without novocaine.  I would rather be hit over the head and knocked unconscious then have a tooth filled while I sit there!

I have hope that I will find joy.  I have peace that I am saved.  I have faith that I do walk with God.  I also take anti depressants and I probably should take more on most days.  I don’t get it.  I probably never will.  I’ll say a prayer but don’t take my pills away.

Psalm 143:7-8

Answer me quickly, Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit. Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life.

Love, Peace, Joy

My last blog for 2015 – a big shout out thank you to all of you who wandered through my thoughts this year!

Take a look at these commands:

Matthew 5:43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Facts: we will have enemies – get over it.  There is evil and good, righteous and unrighteous – you’re not going to stop the evil – it’s here to stay.  Anyone can love the loveable.  Go out and love the unloveable.

We are children of our Father in heaven.  Let’s try living like it.  Love someone.  Make peace.  Spread joy.  Be a light to your corner of the world.  Whether you affect one person or millions it doesn’t matter.  The fact that you are influencing is what is important.

Give a hand up.  Give a smile.  Carry someone’s bags.  Love like a child with innocence.

Love, peace, joy – they are very simple instructions.  See if you can make a difference.

Joy and Happiness

Can we be happy without being joyful?  Can we be joyful and yet miserable?  If given a choice, would you rather be happy or joyful?

They aren’t the same thing – happiness and joy.  Happiness is temporary – an emotion that passes through for a moment.  I’m happy when I eat cake.  I’m not happy when I get the sugar low after eating it or when I gain weight from it.  I’m happy when the Phillies get a hit and I’m unhappy when they lose the game.  Happiness is like other emotions – anger, sadness and fear.

Joy.  Joy is in our soul.  It is both a foundation and a fountain that runs through our veins.  We can grieve and yet know joy is there.  Joy from our Father goes far beyond the temporary situations that we face – it gives us hope, faith and strength to weather the storms that we face.

The Bible references happiness about 30 times.  It references joy over 300 times.

Enjoy happiness when it comes.

Cling to joy in every moment whether you feel like it or not.  Our joy is rooted in our faith in God.  It is everlasting.

If you’re not happy – I’m sorry.  I hope your situation changes.

If you’re not rejoicing – seek the Lord and don’t stop until you wrap your arms around Him.

James 1:Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

Faith

Brian, would you like to recommend Faith?  I found this amusing.  It was a prompt line on Linkedin for a friend named “Faith”.

Would I like to recommend Faith and faith.  I would like to recommend love, joy, and peace too.

Can I recommend salvation through Jesus?  Yes

How about prayer?  Sure

We don’t believe out of fear.  We don’t follow out of force.  We don’t worship out of duress.  We believe, follow and worship by choice through faith.

Hebrews 11:6

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Bendy Straws – a re-post from March 2012

I was at a restaurant with my sons the other day.  Our drinks came and I smiled because I got a “bendy straw”.  I didn’t say anything because I was too embarrassed.  But then my sons said “Hey! Bendy straws!  I love bendy straws!”  Oh, how the small things in life can give us pleasure!  I am infatuated with hawks that now live along our highways and I thank God every time I see one.  I love sunsets, a cool breeze, and the sound of waves at the ocean.  Many of these small joys in life I learned as a child.

My biggest joy is being able to curl up in my Father’s lap and feel His love when it seems like the whole world is against me.  I learned this as a child too.  Who can harm us when we sit in His lap?

I pray that all of you get to experience small and large joys today.  I hope that you are able to remember joys from your childhoods and smile as you go about your “adult” duties.  Most of all I pray that you will take the time to curl up in our Father’s lap and just cuddle.

Luke 10:21
At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
